Accelerating Scientific Discovery
Defining the Future of Industry
Rooted in first principles,
Driven by intelligence,
Promoting interdisciplinarity,
Shaping the future.
The School of Artificial Intelligence for Science (AI4S-PKU) of Peking University is a forward-looking initiative responding to the scientific revolution and industrial transformation in the intelligent era. It is committed to building an innovative ecosystem for the in-depth integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and basic sciences. Guided by the educational philosophy of "Rooted in first principles, Driven by intelligence, Promoting interdisciplinarity, Shaping the future.", the School pioneered the world’s first collaborative talent development platform integrating "industry-education integration" and "science-education integration" in the field of AI for Science. It focuses on cultivating interdisciplinary talents with AI for Science literacy, cross-disciplinary innovation capabilities, and international perspectives, aiming to advance paradigm shifts in basic scientific discovery and core technological breakthroughs through AI.
As a key carrier for interdisciplinary development at Peking University, the School relies on the world’s first self-established interdisciplinary discipline of "AI for Science" and takes the lead in focusing on two core directions: fundamentals of AI for Science, and intelligent matter and life sciences. Through an innovative paradigm integrating "scientific big data + first principles + industrial demands", it systematically constructs theoretical systems and key technologies for AI for Science. In talent cultivation, the School adopts an "AI + Science" dual-mentorship system, integrates cutting-edge research with industrial practice through mechanisms such as university-enterprise joint laboratories and industrial tutor systems, and strengthens students’ ability to apply AI technologies to solve major scientific problems and industrial bottlenecks.
Based in Shenzhen, the School leverages the research strengths of the university’s main campus and the industrial innovation resources of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area to continuously deepen strategic cooperation with key regional industries. Its core layouts include: building next-generation AI for Science infrastructure in fields such as biomedicine and advanced materials relying on independently innovated large-model technology systems; deepening the "AI for Science + industrial demand" dual-drive model to accelerate the penetration of cutting-edge technologies into strategic industries; promoting international big science cooperation to innovate cross-border and cross-institutional collaborative research paradigms; and building a transnational and cross-field collaborative innovation network through initiating the establishment of the "International Alliance for AI for Science".
Over the next five years, the School plans to systematically cultivate over 800 strategic talents with "dual cores" in AI and mathematical sciences, equipped with both engineering thinking and scientific insight. It will establish a full-life-cycle management system for the transformation of scientific research achievements, strive to promote the industrialization of more basic research outcomes, providing talent support, technological reserves, and paradigm leadership for the country to achieve high-level technological self-reliance and self-improvement.
