Peking University Holds Expert Demonstration Meeting on Autonomous Establishment of "Scientific Intelligence" Interdisciplinary Discipline

On the afternoon of August 23, 2024, Peking University held an expert demonstration meeting on the autonomous establishment of the "Scientific Intelligence" interdisciplinary discipline degree authorization point in Conference Room 8 of Yingjie Communication Center. Professor Wang Bo, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Vice President, and Provost of Peking University, and Academician Zhang Jin, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Vice President, and Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School, attended the meeting. Relevant persons in charge from the Graduate School’s Admission Office, Training Office, Professional Degree Graduate Education Management Office, and Degree Office, as well as staff from Shenzhen Graduate School, participated in the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Xu Ming, Vice Dean of the Graduate School and Executive Dean of the Medical Branch.

The expert panel for the demonstration meeting consisted of senior experts from universities, research institutions, and industry, covering multiple disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and engineering, and computer science and technology. The panel included Academician Zheng Weimin from the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University; Academician Shi Songhai, Dean of the School of Life Sciences at Tsinghua University and Director of Tsinghua-IDG/McGovern Institute for Brain Research; Academician E Weinan, Director of the International Machine Learning Research Center at Peking University; Academician Zhang Jin, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Vice President, and Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School at Peking University; Researcher Huang Gang, Director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Li Jianxin, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Computer Science at Beihang University; Professor Su Yanjing from the Institute of New Materials Technology at University of Science and Technology Beijing; Researcher Tan Guangming, Director of the High-Performance Computer Research Center at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dr. Wang Haifeng, National Outstanding Engineer and Chief Technology Officer of Baidu; Researcher Wang Lei from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Peng Liangyou, Vice Dean of the School of Physics at Peking University; Professor Wang Liwei, Dean Assistant of the School of Intelligence at Peking University; Professor Yang Zhen, Executive Dean of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School; and Professor Zhu Jian, Vice Dean of the School of Life Sciences at Peking University. Academician Zheng Weimin served as the leader of the expert panel.

Expert Panel Members

Professor Tian Yonghong, Dean of the School of Information Engineering at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, delivered a special report on the addition of the "Scientific Intelligence" interdisciplinary discipline degree authorization point managed as a reference secondary discipline. He introduced the urgency, feasibility, and construction plan of Peking University’s "Scientific Intelligence" interdisciplinary discipline from the aspects of discipline construction background, disciplinary foundation, construction goals and ideas, and quality assurance measures. He also proposed to leverage Shenzhen’s industrial and resource advantages, promote the integration of information disciplines and basic disciplines through a pilot exploration and gradual improvement path of discipline construction and development, and drive technological innovation and social development.

The expert panel carefully listened to the report on the demonstration plan for the "Scientific Intelligence" degree authorization point, reviewed relevant application materials, and conducted in-depth discussions on issues related to Peking University’s autonomous establishment of the "Scientific Intelligence" interdisciplinary discipline degree authorization point. They put forward suggestions on faculty team building, curriculum system development, training process design, and evaluation standard formulation. After discussion, the expert panel agreed that the "Scientific Intelligence" interdisciplinary discipline has distinct characteristics, with disciplinary directions rooted in academic frontiers and national needs. The establishment of this discipline can systematically cultivate high-quality talents with interdisciplinary backgrounds and AI research capabilities, effectively alleviating the shortage of high-end talents in China’s artificial intelligence field and supporting the talent - strong country strategy. The establishment of the "Scientific Intelligence" interdisciplinary discipline will accelerate the transformation of new scientific research paradigms and contribute to Peking University’s construction of "new engineering, new science, and new liberal arts" as well as the cultivation of high - level innovative talents.
