A New Chapter in AI for Science: Initiative to Launch the Global Alliance for the Development of Scientific Intelligence

On the morning of August 23, a grand gathering of top academic institutions and industry leaders was held at Zhongguan New Garden of Peking University, marking the official launch of the initiative to establish the "Global Alliance for the Development of Scientific Intelligence." This initiative aims to promote the in-depth integration and widespread application of artificial intelligence technologies in scientific research, ushering in a new era of scientific intelligence.

Conference Scene

Academician Zhang Jin, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of Peking University, and Dean of the Shenzhen Graduate School, delivered a speech. He emphasized: "Against the backdrop of current global technological development, the initiative to establish the 'Global Alliance for the Development of Scientific Intelligence' is a crucial move that aligns with the trend of the times. We hope the alliance will gather global wisdom, accelerate the deep integration of AI and scientific research, and bring more profound impacts to human society."

Academician E Weinan, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, and Director of the International Machine Learning Research Center at Peking University, delivered an initiative speech. With his profound academic achievements and forward-looking vision, he elaborated to the participants on the original intention and vision of the alliance’s establishment. He stated: "The 'Global Alliance for the Development of Scientific Intelligence' will strive to build an open, cooperative, and shared international exchange platform, promoting innovative applications of AI technologies in fields such as life sciences, physical sciences, and materials sciences, and helping scientific research achieve leapfrog development."

Professor Tian Yonghong, Dean of the School of Information Engineering at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, provided a detailed introduction to the alliance’s overall framework and future plans. He mentioned that the alliance will carry out work in multiple dimensions, including the formulation of development strategies, innovation in organizational forms, and alignment with industrial needs, to promote the popularization and application of scientific intelligence technologies and foster a global scientific intelligence industry ecosystem.

At the conference, scholars from top universities such as Peking University, Fudan University, and Xiamen University; representatives from research institutions including the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, National Center for Protein Science, Suzhou Laboratory, and Zhejiang Laboratory; and industry representatives from Baidu, China Mobile, and BETRICH, engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics such as the alliance’s development strategy, organizational form, and industrial needs. Many industry and academic leaders put forward a series of forward-looking suggestions. All participants agreed that the establishment of the "Global Alliance for Scientific Intelligence" will not only set a new benchmark for the global AI for Science field but also effectively drive the emergence of breakthroughs in scientific research, accelerate enterprises’ achievement of meta-innovation, and inject strong momentum into the sustainable development of the global economy and society.

Finally, Academician E Weinan delivered a concluding speech. He emphasized that the alliance should bravely undertake the mission of technological innovation, actively respond to suggestions from all parties, expand the scope of cooperation, strengthen collaboration with top international institutions, build a broader international cooperation network, realize collaboration between northern, southern, and central regions, encourage more institutions to participate, support industry development, and leverage its advantages to actively coordinate resources to provide strong support for the establishment of the AI4S Special Committee.

With the successful conclusion of the conference, the initiative for the "Global Alliance for the Development of Scientific Intelligence" officially sets sail. This historic moment not only witnesses the cooperation between top academic institutions and industry leaders but also heralds a new journey for the field of scientific intelligence.
